Online Instruction

The Office of Instructional Development encourages a collaborative approach to the creation and production of hybrid and online courses.

Coming from the perspective that there is no "one-size-fits-all" model to any instruction, we work with faculty to not merely translate a course into a new medium, but rather redesign the course utilizing the best pedagogical practices and technology that matches the learning objectives and teaching style of the faculty.

 

At OID, faculty develop courses in consultation with a team comprised of instructional designers, instructional technologists, assessment specialists, and media production professionals. Both Senate and non-Senate faculty have participated in this process in order to provide online courses during the regular academic year, Summer Session, and as part of System-wide Initiatives.

Advantages of Learning Online

  • Allow students to view materials at their preferred pace.  In lecture podcasts, for example, students can pause and rewind material for greater comprehension.  This may be particularly useful for a course which enrolls students with a diversity of language skills and backgrounds.
  • Offer flexibility for non-traditional students who balance job- and family-related responsibilities.
  • Provides accessible links to further resources and multimedia information
  • Potentially allow more students to enroll.
  • Draws on student interest in online learning

Introducing the Learning Glass

The Office of Instructional Development now offers faculty the opportunity to use the Learning Glass, a transparent glass board, to enhance their online instruction.  Contact OID Instructional Media Production (impoid@ucla.edu) for more information on how to use this service!

Many instructors approach online teaching as a re-purposing of existing courses through a process of “curriculum conversion,” where a course taught face-to-face is converted or loaded onto the web for online delivery.  Educational researchers suggest, however, that the most effective online courses require more than converting content; instructors should use this opportunity to redesign teaching methodologies to facilitate online community, interaction and assessment.  Digital and online technologies offer instructors and students new opportunities to engage material and construct knowledge.
