UCLA’s Office of Instructional Development (OID) and Center for Education Innovation & Learning in the Sciences (CEILS) are collaborating to host an all-day, campus-wide teaching symposium on March 6, 2019 at the UCLA Faculty Center. Our goal is for this event to highlight and celebrate the breadth of teaching innovations across our campus. We hope to illuminate how, while there are disciplinary differences in learning outcomes and teaching practices, there is much we can share and learn from each other.

The symposium will feature a keynote talk by Dr. Andrea Greenhoot, Professor of Psychology, Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, and Gautt Teaching Scholar at the University of Kansas. It will also include lightning talks by UCLA faculty, all of whom have actively engaged in innovative instruction, as well as 45-minute, hands-on workshops led by UCLA educational leaders. Another not-to-be-missed element is a panel of students discussing teaching practices that best enable them to learn.

How Redefining Teaching Can Supercharge Learning

Andrea Follmer Greenhoot, University of Kansas

The ecosystem of American higher education is changing rapidly. Diversification of the college-going population, digital technology, and insights from learning sciences have made effective teaching practice feel like a moving target. How can faculty adapt their teaching to the challenges and opportunities that come with this new reality? In this talk, I will present a powerful yet simple approach that involves redefining what we mean by teaching. I will share examples from faculty colleagues who have used this approach to create high impact learning experiences that develop students’ intellectual, affective and reflective capacities and prepare them for an uncertain future. Discussion will explore how faculty can innovate their courses to both enhance their students’ learning and enrich their experiences as teachers.

Speaker Biography:

Andrea Follmer Greenhoot is Professor of Psychology, Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Gautt Teaching Scholar at the University of Kansas. Her research in psychology is on cognitive development and memory. In the Center for Teaching Excellence, she explores the applications of cognitive and developmental science to teaching and learning in higher education. Supported by grants from the Spencer, Teagle, and National Science Foundations, much of her work has examined course and curriculum design strategies to help large numbers of diversely-prepared students achieve a high level of success in learning in a research university context. She led the development, evaluation, and scaling-up of KU’s first year seminar program, and has led or co-led multi-institutional projects on transforming entry-level STEM courses, innovating Humanities teaching, and new methods for evaluating teaching. Prof. Greenhoot is also Associate Director of the Bay View Alliance (BVA), a consortium of research universities collaboratively exploring strategies to foster improved undergraduate education.
