The UCLA Senior Class Survey was designed to give a better understanding of students’ academic and co-curricular experiences at the university. Survey topics range from the overall UCLA experience, student life, and intellectual challenges, to the quality of faculty and courses, undergraduate research, and involvement in UCLA after graduation. Since 2006, the survey has been administered annually to approximately 8,000 seniors in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, School of Arts and Architecture, and the School of Theater, Film, and Television. Response rates range from 30-80% annually. Our goal at the Center is to ensure that annual findings from the senior survey help shape the UCLA experience in positive ways for future generations of Bruins.
The survey instrument is comprised of approximately 65 questions, in both closed- and open-ended response formats. Every year, students are asked to reflect on their UCLA experience in five specific areas.
After the analyses are conducted, reports are produced separately by College (L&S, SOAA, and TFT), and further divided by division and major field for all programs with at least 15 students responding. To create the reports for majors with less than 15 respondents, data from multiple years are merged. These reports are shared with the following individuals and groups across the UCLA campus: Academic Senate; deans; department chairs; Faculty Executive Committee; and Undergraduate Council.
Findings in the reports allow faculty and staff to better understand the experiences of students in their departments, and to compare results from their individual departments to both other departments and to the campus as a whole. Results are also presented as data in academic program reviews.
General results of the analyses from the UCLA College are available to all UCLA students, staff, and faculty, online at http://www.college.ucla.edu/seniorsurvey/.
In addition to the internal and external reports regularly shared across campus, the Center for Educational Assessment develops specialized senior survey reports to accommodate specific needs of UCLA departments and to share notable findings with the larger research community.
